Polyurethane Grouting

Polyurethane(PU) resin grouting significantly improves the mechanical and sealing properties of rock and soil surfaces for construction purposes. The injecting of liquid grouting material into either man made structures or a variety of natural surface environments is a common element of commercial construction. All fissures, gaps and porous voids are connected by using grouting techniques. Since the 1980’s, PU has been used extensively in the mining industry. It has spread in the new millennium into many civil engineering and geotechnical applications.

A wide range of underground construction projects currently employ PU grouting such as; filling caverns, fault zone protection and stabilization, excavation control during tunnel construction, water inflow sealing protection, rock and soil anchoring enhancement, ceiling and wall stability in underground mines, overburden security in mining applications, prevention of rock burst in coal mines, sealing of environmentally hazardous waste pits, limiting mine wind flows, underwater construction and numerous other uses. Above ground, PU is used to strengthen subsoil as well as embankments and excavations, stabilizing slopes and anchoring retaining walls, landslide stabilization, inhibiting permeability of rock mass, securing structures endangered by close proximity to construction or mining, brick and stone masonry projects, sealing of joints, insulation and utility entries in commercial construction, parking garages, manholes and a host of other applications. It is particularly useful in foundation work and water management. In this latter application waterproofing becomes viable. PU is widely used on bridges, canals, dams, waterside roads and underwater building projects.

There is no better option when trying to eradicate water problems from leaks through cracks and joints in concrete structures. Hydrophobic and hyprophillic, are two different varieties of polyurethane grouts used in dealing with water. The former repels water while the latter absorbs it. Hydrophobic polyurethane grout expands in fending off water permeability. Hydrophillic grout has low expansion properties and cures into a flexible foam. Polyurethane grout has a multiplicity of uses and has truly become an essential component of many construction projects.
